REMAS Project start

With the signatures of the representatives of the Valencia Provincial Council – Diputación Provincial de Valencia (DIVAL), Antoni Gaspar, and the Asssociation of Forest Municipalities of the Comunitat Valenciana – Asociación de Municipios Forestales de la Comunitat Valenciana (AMUFOR), Consuelo Alfonso, the partners agreements for the execution of the European project of the Interreg Sudoe programme  «Greenhouse gas emissions risk management in forest forest fires» (REMAS).

The partnership is also composed by Spanish partners: the Polytechnic University of Valencia – Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV-ITACA), the University of Valencia – Universitat de València (UV-CIDE) and the National Institute for Agricultural and Food Research ahnd Technology – Instituto Nacional de Investigación y Tecnología Agraria y Alimentaria (INIA) (Spain); by Portuguese partners:  the Municipality of Loulé – Municipio de Loulé (CML), the Agronomic Research Institute – Instituto Superior de Agronomía (ISA) and by French partners: Agronomic Science University of Bordeaux – École Nationale Supérieure des Sciences Agronomiques de Bordeaux Aquitaine (Bordeaux Sciences Agro).

This project is lead by AMUFOR and it will accurately measure the impact of forest fires in terms of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Its budget is 1.8M €, of which, through the ERDF Grant, the EU contributes 75%. The project has a duration of 36 months.

REMAS will analyze, in addition to the material, environmental and social consequences, the impact of forest fires on CO2 emissions. All the study is framed in a context where CO2 emissions risk management in forest fires is crucial to turn the vicious circle: forest fires – GHG emissions – climate change, into an opportunity for the forestry sector. The forest area is the largest manageable carbon sink and its correct management makes it a powerful climate change mitigation tool.
